Weakness

By the time Lu Li arrived, Bu Xiaoyu had already left. He had no idea of the exchange that had taken place just before he came, nor did he realize that his casual remark had sparked such resentment.

This was his first time visiting Qin Yu's office. Though the general's quarters weren't excessively luxurious, the level of security exceeded even that of the palace.

"I made this, and it's best eaten hot, or the noodles will get soggy." Lu Li hardly took in his surroundings, focused on pulling Qin Yu over to the nearby sofa. He carefully opened the insulated container.

The container had kept the noodles hot, just as fresh as when he'd packed them, though they had softened slightly with time.

The moment he opened the lid, the rich aroma of noodles filled the entire room, impossible to ignore.

"Give it a try!" Lu Li handed him the chopsticks, his face lit with anticipation.

Qin Yu took a bite, and his taste buds were immediately captivated by the flavor.

"How is it?" Lu Li asked, carefully studying his expressionless face.

"It's very good," Qin Yu affirmed, sincerely acknowledging his cooking. Though he wasn't one for flattery, these words were genuine.

Knowing Qin Yu's straightforward nature, Lu Li felt a surge of happiness. He had made one of his best dishes, worried that Qin Yu, accustomed to meals from top chefs, might not enjoy it.

"Have some, too." Qin Yu nudged the second serving toward him.

After they both finished eating, Lu Li started cleaning up. Just as he was about to leave, there was a knock at the door.

"Come in," Qin Yu called.

Zhou Junyan walked in and immediately sniffed the air. "It smells amazing. What's that scent?"

"Lu Li made me noodles," Qin Yu replied.

Zhou Junyan looked at the General as if seeing a stranger. Was he bragging that his wife could cook? Was this really the Qin Yu he knew? It seemed that love truly did lower one's IQ—apparently even someone like Qin Yu, who was famously indifferent to human emotions, was no exception.

"I didn't know the Madam could cook. I'll have to try it sometime too," Zhou Junyan said, smiling at Lu Li.

"Well, Colonel Zhou, better come while I'm still around," Lu Li replied with a smile.

Zhou Junyan raised an eyebrow, taking note—clearly, the Marshal's wife was perceptive.

"What brings you here?" Qin Yu cut in.

"If you need to discuss official matters, I can leave," Lu Li offered before Zhou Junyan could respond. Even if he no longer had any contact with the Federation, people might still doubt his intentions.

Qin Yu didn't stop him, only reminding him to be careful on the way.

Lu Li knew better than to wander around the military base, and he replied, "I will," as he left the office. Though he remembered the way back, he had one of the soldiers escort him out.

Not far off, two figures watched him leave.

"Noyce, you know what the general just said to me? He asked me to cook for his wife, but then that person demanded I stop preparing meals for the general! I told the general, and he actually agreed with him!" The complainer was none other than Bu Xiaoyu, who'd come to vent her frustrations to Noyce after leaving Qin Yu's office.

"You were the one who offered to cook for the general in the first place. He was just concerned about his wife; it makes sense to have you cook for him as well," Noyce replied, unaffected. If Bu Xiaoyu could cook for the General, why not for his spouse?

"Even so, how could he take away my right to cook for the general? That man's barely arrived, and he's already asserting his authority. Who knows how long the general's interest in him will last? I hear the general's mother doesn't like him…" Bu Xiaoyu muttered, glaring at Lu Li's retreating figure.

"Enough. The General's wife is not for us to criticize, and don't forget, this is a military base. Anything we say here could easily reach the General's ears. You know his temper—do you want to end up like An Ming?" Noyce abruptly cut her off.

Many didn't realize how much the General valued his wife, but those who spent time around him understood. To Qin Yu, his wife was more important than his own life, which was why he'd initially assigned his most reliable aide, An Ming, to look after him. Now that An Ming had been sent back, it was clear that the General was deeply disappointed in him.

Anyone who lost the General's favor would hardly have a promising future. Noyce didn't know what was in store for An Ming, but he was certain of one thing—An Ming would never again appear before the General.

Bu Xiaoyu hadn't grasped this. Though An Ming had been reassigned, his position in the First Legion hadn't changed much, and he seemed untouched by any penalty. She considered this a mild consequence, so she dismissed Noyce's warning.

"I just don't understand why the General defends him so much, even going so far as to defy the Marshal's orders for him."

"Who can say when it comes to matters of the heart?" Noyce replied with a complicated expression that Bu Xiaoyu didn't catch.

"Noyce, be honest with me—how did the General meet him? Was it really on Brown Star? I mean, how does someone marry a person they've known for less than half a year?" The more Bu Xiaoyu thought about it, the more things seemed suspicious.

Noyce frowned. "Of course it was on Brown Star. How would I know what goes through the Marshal's mind?"

"Really?" Bu Xiaoyu looked at him skeptically.

Noyce nodded firmly.

"Fine," she said, finally dropping the matter.

Noyce breathed a sigh of relief, though it was premature; he had underestimated her determination.

***

"Did you know that Qin Yu brought him to the base?" Madam Qin's voice rang out furiously as Marshal Qin stepped through the door, barely inside and still in his coat. A vein throbbed on his forehead.

"And who's to blame for that? If you hadn't deliberately scalded him with hot water yesterday, Qin Yu wouldn't have been so angry as to bring him to the base."

"Oh, so now you're trying to dredge up old grievances? How is this my fault? I was against letting that seductress set foot in the Qin household to begin with, but you all insisted on letting him stay!" Madam Qin stubbornly defended herself, her voice growing louder, as if she were the one in the right.

Marshal Qin rubbed his temples, exasperated. For the first time, he wondered if his wife's reasoning was truly as unsound as it seemed.

He could easily picture how Qin Yu must have been provoked this morning, prompting him to take Lu Li to the base.

"I'm not here to argue about yesterday's incident. Lu Li is not from the military, and he… well, anyway, he can't live at the base."

"Then go tell him to leave," Madam Qin sneered.

"Qin Yu already made it clear: until you apologize, he won't return. You know his temper. He won't change his mind and might even never come back. Think about your second son and decide what to do," Leaving her with this, Marshal Qin headed upstairs, ignoring his wife's outburst behind him.

When it came to tactics, Madam Qin was no match for the Marshal. If the issue were solely the military base, she would scoff at the idea of backing down, but when it involved her sons, she would eventually have to relent.

Later that evening, while the Marshal was working in his study, a servant informed him that his wife was asking for him.
