After seeing Hai Zhu off, Wu Bai returned to the room to check on Xiao Zimo. Noticing that he still hadn't woken, Wu Bai's heart tightened with worry.
Since Hai Shi had already regained consciousness, Wu Bai closed the courtyard gate and left to seek the village doctor's help once more.
The doctor, who had come to examine Xiao Zimo at the Wu house the previous day, had been called to Hai Zhu's home afterward. As the doctor's home was closer to Hai Zhu's family, he already knew that Hai Shi had awakened. When he saw Wu Bai at his door, he asked, "Bai-ger, has the man your family saved yesterday woken up yet?"
"No, Uncle Hai. Could you come by and check on him again?" Wu Bai asked.
The doctor's family had lived in Haining Village for generations, so he too shared the surname Hai.
Hearing that Xiao Zimo was still unconscious, the doctor, acting out of a healer's compassion, retrieved his medical kit and followed Wu Bai back to the Wu household.
After checking Xiao Zimo's pulse again, the doctor reassured Wu Bai, whose face was taut with worry. "No need to worry, Bai-ger. His pulse is strong and steady. He's fine and should regain consciousness by this afternoon."
With that, Wu Bai finally felt relieved.
So focused was he on Xiao Zimo that he failed to notice the complicated look in the doctor's eyes. Since Hai Zhu's family lived close by, the doctor was well aware that Hai Zan, Hai Zhu's brother, had feelings for Wu Bai. Now, seeing Wu Bai so concerned over the young man lying in bed, he couldn't help but feel a twinge of regret for Hai Zan. Upon closer inspection, he found Xiao Zimo to be a strikingly handsome fellow, undeniably more charming than the swarthy Hai Zan. No wonder Bai-ger's heart was so moved.
Unaware of the doctor's musings, Wu Bai felt only joy at knowing Xiao Zimo would wake soon. He thanked the doctor and sent him off with some copper coins.
With time pressing on, Wu Bai headed to the kitchen to start cooking. His father and brother, who had gone fishing earlier, would likely be back soon.
Sure enough, as soon as Wu Bai finished preparing the meal, Father Wu and Brother Wu returned. Brother Wu carried today's catch, while Father Wu brought back some of the wild greens Wu Bai had mentioned the day before.
The two set their things down and checked in on Xiao Zimo before washing up for the meal.
"How is he still not awake? Do you think something might be wrong?" Father Wu asked as he sat down. He had met someone from Hai Zhu's family that morning and learned they had also saved a man by the shore who'd woken up that very morning. Why, then, was their guest still unconscious?
"No, there's nothing wrong," Wu Bai replied. "I asked Uncle Hai to check on him just now, and he said he should wake by this afternoon."
"That's good." Father Wu nodded and began to eat. He couldn't help but note how wonderfully fragrant Bai-ger's dishes and fish soup were today.
By afternoon, as promised, Xiao Zimo stirred awake.
Xiao Zimo blinked, taking in the unfamiliar ger before him. He thought, My luck really held out—I was sure I'd perish in that shipwreck.
"You're awake!" Wu Bai exclaimed, clearly delighted.
"Did you save me?" Xiao Zimo asked weakly.
Seeing him struggle to speak, Wu Bai nodded. He went to the kitchen and brought back a bowl of medicine he'd kept warm by the stove, intending to help Xiao Zimo drink it.
Xiao Zimo sat up slowly, leaning against his pillow, and said to Wu Bai, "I'll drink it myself."
Wu Bai didn't argue and handed the bowl over.
Xiao Zimo checked the temperature and, finding it just right, downed the medicine in one go. But he drank too fast and started coughing, choking slightly.
Wu Bai rushed over to pat his back, helping him catch his breath. After a while, Xiao Zimo's coughing finally subsided.
"You just woke up; your body's still weak. You should lie down and rest," Wu Bai said, gently easing Xiao Zimo back onto the bed and tucking him in.
Then Wu Bai took out a shirt and needlework from nearby and sat on a stool to mend it. It was a shirt of Brother Wu's that had accidentally been torn. Since delicate tasks like this had always fallen to him, Wu Bai didn't mind taking care of it.
Lying on the bed, Xiao Zimo tilted his head to watch Wu Bai. He found himself mesmerized by Wu Bai's focused expression, feeling an odd flutter in his chest as his eyes stayed locked on him.
Sunlight streamed in from the window, casting a warm glow over Wu Bai, as if cloaking him in light. Xiao Zimo's gaze softened unconsciously.
When Wu Bai finished mending the shirt, snipping the thread with scissors, Xiao Zimo snapped back to himself and asked, "Where is this place?"
Hearing Xiao Zimo's question, Wu Bai turned and replied, "This is Haining Village, in Yangjiang Province."
"We're already in Yangjiang Province?" Xiao Zimo murmured.
"Yes. By the way, where are you from? And what's your name?" Wu Bai asked, only then realizing that he hadn't asked for the man's name in this world. Influenced by memories from the past world, he'd simply assumed it would be Xiao Zimo again and hadn't thought to confirm.
"My name is Xiao Mo." Remembering his mission in Yangjiang Province, Xiao Zimo instinctively omitted the last character of his name, wanting to keep his true identity hidden.
"Xiao Mo." Wu Bai repeated, relieved that he'd thought to ask. He hadn't expected the man to be called anything but Xiao Zimo in this world, though it was only one character shorter. His face and form were just as they had been.
"So, Brother Xiao Mo, where are you from, and how did you end up in a shipwreck?" Wu Bai inquired.
Xiao Zimo hesitated, deciding to obscure his real birthplace. "I'm from Yuhuai Province. My family has been merchants for generations, and I came to Yangjiang Province after hearing that many interesting items are popular here. I intended to stock up on goods to sell back home, but misfortune struck. I was caught in a shipwreck—thankfully, you saved me."
Wu Bai didn't doubt him. Yuhuai Province was close to the capital, so Xiao Zimo's slight accent fit.
When Father Wu and Brother Wu returned in the evening, they found Xiao Zimo awake. After learning he'd washed ashore in Haining Village after a shipwreck, they expressed their sympathy. Fortunately, unlike the man saved by Hai Zhu's family, Xiao Zimo hadn't lost his memory. This meant that he would leave once he recovered, which relieved the Wu family. Their house was small, and last night Father Wu and Brother Wu had barely slept, crammed together in a tiny bed.
***
Since Father Wu and Brother Wu hadn't come home for lunch on this day, Wu Bai packed up a meal and headed to the shore to bring it to them.
Living by the sea, Haining villagers were well aware of its dangers and rarely ventured far from shore. The villagers found ample catch by the shallows, where waves often brought a bountiful supply of seafood to their small village.
During times of plenty, Father Wu and Brother Wu would often forgo returning home at midday to gather as much as possible. Through his memories, Wu Bai knew the original Wu Bai would bring lunch to them on such days. Since his family hadn't come back by now, he guessed they'd be staying out and set off with the packed food.
Though Xiao Zimo was now awake, he was still too injured to leave his bed. The doctor had said Xiao Zimo was lucky to have survived—being thrown into the sea and struck by debris. While it would take time for his body to heal, the injuries were not permanent.
So, as Wu Bai left with the meal basket, Xiao Zimo could only watch him go, sighing as he lowered his head to the food Wu Bai had set by his side.
Wu Bai, with the meal basket in hand, walked down the path to the shore, humming cheerfully. Now that Xiao Zimo had regained consciousness, he could finally breathe easier.
His good mood, however, was soon dampened by two figures ahead, or rather, one of them in particular.
From a short distance, he spotted two people walking toward him. One of them, a cheerful young ger, waved and called out, "Bai-ger! Bai-ger!"
It was Hai Zhu, accompanied by the person his family had rescued, Hai Shi.
Wu Bai surmised that Hai Shi had recovered quickly because he hadn't been struck by any debris during the accident. As for his memory loss, Wu Bai recalled his husband once mentioning that a lack of oxygen during drowning could lead to temporary amnesia, though it usually didn't last long. In his memories, Wu Bai recalled Hai Shi behaving oddly after a time, becoming irritable, sullen, and casting them strange glances. It was then, Wu Bai realized, that Hai Shi must have regained his memories.
Afterward, Hai Shi often left the village, heading to the town. The original Wu Bai had assumed it was because Hai Shi was unskilled in fishing and was simply seeking work elsewhere.
Seeing Hai Zhu so enthusiastically waving, Wu Bai forced a polite smile and greeted him, despite not feeling the same about Hai Shi beside him. "Hai Zhu, are you taking lunch to your father and brother as well?"
Hai Zhu nodded happily. "Yes! Bai-ger, let's go together!"
The two began walking toward the shore side by side. Hai Zhu, who had long admired Bai-ger, hoped to find a fine-looking ger like him to marry into his family. Having been friends since childhood, he naturally gravitated close to Wu Bai. Wu Bai, meanwhile, quickened his steps to avoid interacting with Hai Shi, and before long, they left him trailing behind.
Neither of them noticed Hai Shi's stunned gaze fixed on Wu Bai. Though his memory was lost, Hai Shi's sense of beauty was intact. Since waking up in the Hai Zhu household, he had assumed all the local gers would be as dark-skinned as Hai Zhu, who was tanned from years under the sun. But now, seeing a fair-skinned ger like Wu Bai was nothing short of astonishing.
