The God Li Lu
The Mecha Training Arena was open to citizens of all galactic systems. Anyone ranked in the top 100 of Board A was considered a genius or a powerhouse in real life.
Rainwalker didn't know that, in reality, Lu Li had a poor physical constitution and relied solely on high mental strength—quite the opposite of what most people assumed.
But as long as he kept quiet, no one on the Cosmic Net would know his secret. Since the chance of exposure was low, Lu Li agreed to help.
When they arrived at the duel site, their opponents were already waiting. Since Lu Li was a newly admitted powerhouse, they didn't immediately recognize him.
"Well, you made it on time. I thought you two would chicken out and lose by default like a couple of cowards." Archie, the younger brother, taunted as they approached. He shot a disdainful look at Lu Li, not seeming to believe this newcomer could be much of a threat.
"If we didn't show up, how would we watch you begging for mercy?" Rainwalker rolled his eyes. "Enough talk—if you want to fight, let's start. I don't have time to waste on you."
Scowling, Archie led them into the battle room.
This match was open to the public, and a crowd was already gathered in the room, likely drawn by their fame. There was even a betting pool, with most of the stakes on Archie and his brother.
"Lu Li, you'd better go all out for this one," Rainwalker whispered mischievously before the match. "I've bet everything I have on us. If we win, we split fifty-fifty."
"You really trust me that much?" Lu Li asked, a bit taken aback. After all, their opponent was Harlow, ranked within the top 100, and even Lu Li couldn't guarantee a victory, as luck could always play a major role. But Rainwalker didn't hesitate to put his entire fortune on the line.
"Of course! You're one of the strongest people I've met." Rainwalker gave him a thumbs-up. He knew exactly how formidable Lu Li was.
They had sparred many times, and each day he could feel Lu Li improving at a rapid pace. Lu Li had climbed from the 100s to the 80s in barely over a month—a feat few could achieve, as every step forward in the top 100 took significant time for most.
"You trust me so much, I suppose I can't let you down." Lu Li smiled.
With that, each summoned their mechas.
Lu Li's was a humanoid mecha, ranking as one of the finer models in its class. Unlike the bulkier, more powerful beast-type mechs, his prioritized agility and maneuverability.
Rainwalker's choice was a beast-type mecha, suited to his preference for straightforward, brute-force fighting.
This wasn't their first time teaming up for a doubles match, and though their experience and synergy weren't quite as developed as the brothers', Lu Li's higher ranking more than made up for any disadvantage.
Then, murmurs rose in the crowd of spectators watching the match.
"Doesn't this Alpha mecha look familiar?" someone asked, referring to Lu Li's chosen model. It was part of the Alpha series from the Cosmic Net store, a popular humanoid model.
"Familiar? The C4 Alpha's pretty common."
The Alpha series had seven models, numbered C1 through C7, with prices increasing from C1 up. The last three models were much pricier, owned by few, but the first four were widely available, so the other spectator assumed he just meant it was a familiar model.
"No, I mean the Alpha C4 and its user. The name Lu Li sounds familiar too. Remember on Board A, that guy named Lu Li shot from the 100s to the 80s recently?"
"Whoa, who's this guy? That's insane—going from over 100th place to the 80s?"
"Oh yeah, now I remember! There was someone like that. Rumor has it he defeated nearly a hundred opponents in just a month and a half."
"I've been following him since he was 181st. A month and a half ago, he suddenly began climbing the ranks, averaging two to three matches a day. He only stopped when he hit 85th place."
More and more spectators began recalling Lu Li's impressive streak. Initially, no one had noticed his steady ascent, but as he kept winning match after match, his rank jumping every few days, he finally started getting attention. However, Lu Li kept a low profile, and recently he hadn't been active online, so the buzz around him had faded—until now, when he reappeared in the public eye, rekindling those memories.
"Looks like the brothers are up against a real powerhouse. Lu Li might have paused his climb, but his last match didn't look particularly challenging for him. I'd bet he has the strength to push even further up the ranks. Harrow is only 93rd—odds aren't in his favor; there's a high chance he'll lose," someone speculated.
"Not necessarily—it's not a solo match. Team synergy is crucial," retorted someone who had bet on Archie and Harlow to win the doubles match.
"Exactly! Archie and Harlow have played doubles for ages and rarely lose. They're bound to be more experienced than their opponents."
The first spectator just chuckled and said no more.
"Bro, that guy Rainwalker brought with him is Lu Li, ranked 85th! Haven't you played against him before?" Archie was shocked when he heard the audience's words. No wonder the name had felt familiar.
They were online every day, though most of the time, they didn't overlap with Lu Li's playing hours. They'd only heard his name from others, and hadn't seen many of his matches.
"I must have been offline when he was ranking up," Harlow realized. He was 93rd, so Lu Li should've had to challenge him to climb further. But, as luck would have it, Harlow wasn't online that day, so Lu Li had skipped ahead to challenge someone ranked just above him. After that, Harlow got busy with matches on the B board and hadn't encountered Lu Li yet.
Not knowing his opponent's skills or style, Harlow grew uneasy. Even with high team synergy, this match might not be an easy one.
As they were struggling with the shock of this realisation, the match timer went off, and the arena referee announced the start.
