Jay knew better than to believe Ge Yan was alone. In fact, as soon as he spoke, he scanned the surroundings and quickly spotted Rex leaning against a tree nearby. Compared to the frail-looking Ge Yan, Rex's presence was far more intimidating, instantly putting Jay on high alert, his right hand instinctively moving to his sword.
"Who are you, and why did you steal my magic beast egg?"
"Are you sure it's your egg?" Ge Yan replied, chuckling as he patted the egg nestled against his chest.
The pointed remark made Jay's face darken. Impossible, he thought—they couldn't possibly know the egg's origins. Surely, Ge Yan was trying to bait him. "I buried this magic beast egg here. If it isn't mine, then whose is it? Be smart and hand it over, and I won't hold you accountable for taking it."
"Quite bold of you, isn't it? Claiming the stolen egg as yours at every turn. I'd say the beast egg belongs to whoever has it in their hands, " Ge Yan replied cheerfully, unfazed by Jay's hostility. He was weak, true, but with Rex by his side, he wasn't concerned.
So, they did know.
Jay's gaze grew darker, both resentful and wary of Rex. Though Rex had been silent the whole time, his presence was so overwhelming it made Jay's scalp prickle. Rex was definitely not someone to cross. But giving up on the egg wasn't an option; he had even killed his own partner for it. Whoever blocked his path to wealth and power would be dealt with.
Visions of a luxurious future wiped away Jay's hesitation. He had to try—this man might not be as formidable as he seemed. With that, he drew his sword.
Ge Yan shrugged and stepped back to Rex's side. Wealth and power truly made people reckless. But even if Jay hadn't drawn his weapon, Rex wouldn't have let him go; the moment Rex decided to wait here, Jay's fate had been sealed.
At first, Ge Yan hadn't understood why Rex insisted on staying. After all, if they were spotted, the existence of the magic beast egg might leak out. But then he realized Rex's likely plan—to eliminate all witnesses. In a world where secrets don't stay hidden for long, Rex seemed intent on covering all traces. Now, Ge Yan even felt a twinge of pity for Jay. As an irrelevant cannon fodder dealt with as an afterthought, Jay's death was truly meaningless. At least Carlos had posed some obstruction; Jay hadn't even qualified as a stone in their path.
Jay soon paid the ultimate price for his greed. In his final moments, he bitterly regretted killing John so hastily—perhaps he might have had a chance to escape otherwise.
The air filled with the sharp scent of blood.
Rex's methods were always ruthless; he never stopped until his target was reduced to fragments. However, the blood was likely to attract magic beasts nearby, and an ambush would be problematic.
Just as the two were preparing to move to a safer location, a loud explosion echoed from afar. The ground trembled slightly, enough for them to feel it from a considerable distance. The impact must have been massive.
Ge Yan almost dropped the magic beast egg, a cold sweat breaking out as his mind conjured a tragic scene of spilled yolk, with a tiny speech bubble over it reading, "I died a tragic death." He shook his head, dispelling the bizarre image.
Rex shot a sharp look toward the source of the sound—the Darkwind Ridge.
"What just happened?" Ge Yan asked, clutching the egg carefully.
Rex turned to him, eyes lingering on the egg tucked under Ge Yan's shirt, which made his belly appear rounded, as though he were heavily pregnant, about nine months along. Rex's expression turned unreadable, almost pitying, as if he were looking at a madman.
Noticing Rex's gaze, Ge Yan felt a bit embarrassed and chuckled, "This way, I won't drop the egg easily, and no one would think there's a magic beast egg here."
Rex gave him a long, assessing look and started walking toward Darkwind Ridge.
Ge Yan hurried after him, and soon felt the discomfort of "carrying a nine-moth baby." With each step, the egg bounced against his stomach, giving him an uncomfortable, jarring sensation. He felt like an expectant mother, and as that thought struck him, it was as if lightning had struck his mind. Now he understood why Rex had looked at him so strangely. Why had he thought of this ridiculous method to protect the egg? After a moment of self-reflection and internal criticism, he finally settled on a more practical way to carry it.
