Lending a Hand
At noon, Wu Mei and Liu Qing returned to make lunch. The others were still on the mountain cutting bamboo. They needed a lot of bamboo to build the house, so the group of seven would need at least two or three days to gather enough. To save time, they decided to stay on the mountain and have their meals there. Wu Mei and Liu Qing would prepare the food and bring it to them.
Wu Mei's household raised chickens, ducks, and pigs. Dahu was in charge of the chickens and ducks, often going out to gather fresh grass for them. As for the pigs, their food was cooked wild grass, carried into the pigsty in large wooden buckets. Having gone without food all morning, the pigs were already noisily demanding their meal.
Feeling much better now, Xu Ran decided to help Wu Mei carry the pig feed.
Although Xu Ran was a grown man, he had been a "fool" for so many years and was used to being pampered by Liu Tong. His physical strength was nowhere near Wu Mei's.
Wu Mei, seeing Xu Ran eagerly running over to help, thought he was just curious and wanted to play around. When he couldn't carry the bucket, he didn't tease him about it, though Xu Ran felt a little embarrassed. To prove he could be helpful, he instead volunteered to scoop the pig feed from the pot into the buckets for him.
He might not be able to handle the heavier tasks, but this job was manageable. Xu Ran felt a small sense of pride at finding something he could do.
Though, admittedly, this "something" was... quite modest.
The weather was hot, and the adults kept their children inside, afraid they might sneak off to swim in the village river. Any accidents would be cause for heartbreak.
The rules were the same for Wu Mei, Wu Lan, and Liu Qing's children—none of them were allowed outside.
As for Tangtang and Guoguo, such thoughts never even crossed their minds.
After Wu Mei and Liu Qing left with the food, Xu Ran instructed Tangtang and Guoguo to organize the other children for their afternoon nap, promising to take them out to play once they woke up.
Of course, Xu Ran didn't really intend to take them out to play. He planned to go help gather pig feed. Wu Mei and the others had gone up the mountain to collect bamboo for building a house, and the chickens and ducks still needed to be fed. Since the adults didn't have time during the day, they had to wait until the evening to do such chores. Feeling guilty that everyone was working so hard for his family's sake, Xu Ran figured he could at least lend a hand.
Xu Ran didn't talk much to the other children; he mostly communicated with them through Tangtang and Guoguo. The two obedient children acted as his little messengers, and they did the job well.
By the time Xu Ran woke up from his nap, almost an hour had passed—though he couldn't be certain, it was just a guess. Tangtang and Guoguo were sleeping beside him, snoring softly, covered in sweat.
Xu Ran fetched a basin of water and a cloth from the courtyard and gently wiped the sweat from the two children's faces before waking them up.
Still groggy, they trailed after Xu Ran as he went to wake the other children.
Like Wu Mei, Wu Lan had two children—one son and one ger while Liu Qing had three—two sons and one ger. Xu Ran wiped the sweat from the foreheads of the ger children, but as for the boys, he left it to Dahu to lead them to the courtyard to wash themselves.
Once everyone was fully awake, Xu Ran had Guoguo organize the group for a trip to gather pig feed.
Dahu, being eight years old, knew where the sickles and baskets were stored, as he often helped with chores around the house. But today, Xu Ran didn't ask him to do any work; he intended to gather the pig feed himself.
One advantage of growing up in the countryside was knowing exactly what plants could be used for pig feed.
