Dividing the Spoils
"What's this magic called?" Ge Yan marveled. It must have healing properties, though he had no idea of its name. In his previous life, he hadn't read novels much, and he'd only watched a few movies—too long ago to remember any details now.
A glimmer of surprise flashed in Rex's eyes. "You don't know?"
"Should I?" Ge Yan asked, puzzled. Although he now possessed Jimmy's body, he had none of his memories. Otherwise, he wouldn't be fumbling blindly, reliant on Rex for everything. As a man with pride, stranded in a world where power reigned supreme, he wished to carve his own path rather than hide behind others.
Rex didn't answer directly. "This is Light Magic, also called Holy Magic. Only those with an affinity for light can wield it."
"Do I have that affinity?" Ge Yan's eyes lit up with excitement. It was like finding the ultimate support class in a game. Though maybe not the strongest in combat, it could be a powerful survival skill—and he'd seen some players within this class turn into real powerhouses.
Rex shook his head indifferently. "Ask yourself."
Ge Yan felt a pang of disappointment. He doubted he had the affinity, yet he still asked, "How can I find out if I do?"
"The Mage's Guild can test it." Rex paused, then added coolly, "Once our work here is done, we can go test it—right now, our main task is more pressing."
Ge Yan nodded, reluctantly shelving his curiosity.
Just as they prepared to move on, voices arguing broke out ahead of them. They weren't especially loud, but close enough to be on their path. As they approached, they saw two adventurers, likely mercenaries, partially hidden by the trees. They seemed oblivious to Rex and Ge Yan's presence. One of the men kicked a thick tree trunk in frustration, shaking a cascade of leaves to the ground.
"Don't think I can't see through you! 'Let me hold onto the beast egg for now,' you say—just so you can keep it all to yourself!" the man who'd kicked the tree shouted, glaring at his companion.
"John, calm down! Do you want to draw everyone else here?" Jay, the man holding the beast egg tightly to his chest, spoke with a frown, clutching it even more protectively as if John might snatch it.
John scoffed. "Oh, I'll calm down, sure—just hand over the egg. The Sacred Beast is all yours."
"No way!" Jay rejected the offer immediately. He'd have to be insane to agree.
John wasn't surprised, having already seen through Jay's intentions. A mocking smile spread across his face. "You don't want the Sacred Beast, yet you expect me to settle for it? Don't forget, I played my part in getting that egg."
"Yet you conveniently forget that our plan was flawless until you messed up and let the Sacred Beast escape. Why should I be the one to take the risk for your mistake?" Jay's words left John's face red with embarrassment. The accusation stung, and he couldn't argue back. Jay didn't want to burn any bridges, so he came up with a compromise.
"We're wasting time arguing. The real priority is finding the Sacred Beast before anyone else. If we catch it, great. If not, we can decide the egg's fate then."
His words seemed to placate John somewhat. espite his earlier bluster, John couldn't deny his interest in the Sacred Beast; a genuine Sacred Beast was invaluable, after all. Even if the egg Jay held might hatch into one, there was no guarantee. But they had stolen it from the Sacred Beast's very nest, making it highly likely.
"What do we do with the egg?" Living things couldn't be stored in their magic rings.
Jay hesitated as well. The egg was large, awkward to carry, and would be risky to hold onto if other adventurers or mercenaries saw it. Their best option was to hide it somewhere safe, which John agreed to. They knew they'd have to keep a close watch on each other for the foreseeable future.
Hidden nearby, Ge Yan watched them stash the egg before leaving. He suddenly felt as if following Rex really was bringing him endless opportunities—a magic beast egg that could be a Sacred Beast, just falling into their laps. If he were in the mercenaries' shoes, he'd be furious to come back and find the egg missing.
After they'd gone, Ge Yan sprinted over to where they'd buried the egg, dug it up, and presented it to Rex with a grin that stretched from ear to ear.
