Explosion in the Lab

"An Ming, do you know what the general has been busy with lately? He hasn't been back in a month." Lu Li had waited a month but finally couldn't resist asking An Ming.

After Qin Yu's shouting that day, he'd realized Qin Yu wasn't angry that he had stolen from him, but rather that he'd disregarded his own safety. It had left Lu Li both stunned and, strangely, with a hint of joy. But after that, Qin Yu hadn't returned, and unease began creeping in.

Could it be that Qin Yu was still angry and didn't want to see him?

Unable to bring himself to contact Qin Yu directly, Lu Li tried to get information through An Ming instead.

"How would I know where the general is, madam? Aren't you the general's spouse? And you don't know where he's gone?" An Ming knew nothing of what had happened that day, or he'd be lording it over him. But even now, he looked down on him, speculating maliciously that maybe the general had finally tired of this person.

Hearing this, Lu Li realized he wouldn't get anything useful out of him and went upstairs with a frown.

On the balcony, he stared at the communicator on his wrist. Qin Yu's name was at the top. A single tap would connect them, letting him ask Qin Yu in person why he hadn't returned in a month. But he hesitated—not because he didn't know what to say, but because he feared the answer would be that Qin Yu wasn't returning because of him.

In a way, he was right; Qin Yu's absence did have something to do with him.

In the end, he didn't contact Qin Yu.

After an early dinner, Lu Li went back to his room.

Since the start, the house staff never held back just because there was a new master in the house. Lu Li was approachable and unlike many wives who, upon moving in, would assert their authority over the household. So the household staff carried on as usual. Here, the only one who disliked him was An Ming.

That night, after his bath, Lu Li didn't go to bed early or read as he usually would. Instead, he logged onto the star network.

His username there was "Li Lu," simply a reversal of his name.

In a flash, his figure appeared in the battle zone. The star network was divided into different areas, with the battle zone being one of the liveliest. Lu Li entered the bustling mech training hall. When he was still a student, unable to pilot a real mech in reality, he had come to the Star Network to live out his dreams.

On the network, piloting a mech didn't require high physical strength, only a strong mental ability. Although Lu Li's physical strength was lacking, his mental strength was above average, and he was a quick learner. He gradually built a reputation and even earned a respectable place in a mech competition hosted by the Star Network.

It was a prestigious interstellar competition; unlike local competitions limited to a single galaxy, the Star Network's contestants were talented people from all star systems. Although he didn't win first place, making it into the top fifty was an impressive feat.

It was through that competition that Lu Li became famous on the Star Network, even making it into the media. However, he didn't want his real identity known, so no one ever found out.

After graduation, he entered his adoptive father's military base for secret training and rarely logged on anymore. He hadn't participated in any more competitions, and many people eventually forgot about him.

Years had passed since he'd last touched a mech, even a virtual one, but Lu Li felt a thrill in his heart as he decided to reclaim the dream of his youth.

The training hall was divided into various levels, and since he'd been here before, he didn't have to start from the lowest. Still, given the long hiatus, he worried his skills might be rusty, so he began from level one.

When immersed in something, time slips by unnoticed.

From rusty to familiar, from level one to level three, Lu Li spent two full days in the training hall. By now, he could pilot a mech smoothly, though he knew he'd need more practice if he wanted to compete again.

On the third day, he logged onto the star network as usual.

That same day, however, a major incident took place on the capital star of the Federation.

An important underground base suddenly exploded, triggering various alarms. Fortunately, there were no major casualties, but much crucial data was destroyed in the explosion. The news reached General Zhang immediately, sending him into a fury.

"Everything was progressing smoothly—how did it explode so suddenly?" General Zhang's furious voice easily reached the ears of the base's head through the communicator.

Among the lost data was not only their own research but also the chip He Jianbai had brought back. Even worse, the chip was a unique item—no matter how many times they'd tried, the data within couldn't be copied. They had been handling it with utmost caution, fearing its damage, and now their fears had come true. Now, with no breakthroughs and the chip destroyed, all progress was lost.

"We don't know either. It was running so smoothly before," the head replied, equally bewildered. "Could it be that the data on the chip was faulty?"

General Zhang was about to say it was impossible, but something occurred to him, stopping him short. He hung up the call and was just about to contact Shen Yuanjie when his communicator rang with the anxious face of his subordinate appearing on the screen.

"Sir, we have a serious situation!"
