Leave the Shorty to Me
Ge Yan couldn't hear the other mercenary's voice anymore, but seeing Rex's satisfied look, he could guess the man had likely met the same fate as his partner. He wanted to peek inside to confirm but hesitated, fearing another gruesome sight that might haunt his dreams. Better to avoid any bloody scenes—he'd rather not risk impulsively stabbing himself awake from another dream of home, missing out on this chance to witness the truth—the mystery now hidden with the killer.
The innkeeper's footsteps finally echoed down the hall, accompanied by a jumble of other footsteps.
Ge Yan pricked up his ears, counting at least three people. He distinctly remembered that when they'd arrived, there had only been the innkeeper, who'd personally served his meal with unusual warmth, always asking if there was enough food and even offering extras free of charge, until Ge Yan admitted he was dining alone.
Thinking back, the innkeeper's behavior now felt overly friendly. And to take so long to appear after such a commotion? Something was definitely off.
As Ge Yan had suspected, the innkeeper now charged up with three others in tow. Judging by their rough edges, these three were certainly no inn staff. The place was too small to afford that many. These men, reeking of bloodlust, looked far more like mercenaries than hired help.
Cautiously but calmly, Ge Yan slipped behind Rex. Your turn again, Master. Don't hold back—go all out.
After all, gore was like one's monthly visitor; experience it a few times, and you get used to it.
Rex's fierce gaze bore down on the innkeeper as he approached, his aura steeped in lingering bloodlust, an intimidating presence that made the four newcomers pause for a beat.
"Those two idiots couldn't even handle a simple task," sneered one of the mercenaries, whose face was slashed with a worm-like scar twisting as he spoke. Seeing Rex without a scratch, his initial confidence faltered, and his face darkened.
"We're four against two. More than enough. Leave the shorty to me—you three can handle the big guy," the innkeeper proposed, trying to avoid the mercenary leader's wrath by volunteering.
The mercenary leader figured he could handle things alone but agreed, not wanting to risk further delays.
Across the room, Ge Yan fumed. Shorty? You're the shorty! Your whole family's short and broke! He wasn't that short! He'd never measured, but he was sure this body wasn't under 178 cm. Back in his world, anything over that was pretty respectable. Yet here, these men all seemed at least 185 cm, with Rex looming over them all at around 190. Ge Yan felt a pang of jealousy he refused to acknowledge.
"Master, finish them off—let them experience your ruthless techniques firsthand," he said, glaring murderously at the innkeeper.
Rex shot him a cryptic look. The way he's getting comfortable calling me 'Master'… Rex quickly shook off the strange thought.
The mercenary leader and his crew lunged forward. The innkeeper tried to circle past Rex to get at Ge Yan, who wisely stayed glued to Rex's back, as if he were his master's shadow.
Unable to find an opening, the innkeeper joined forces with the mercenaries to attack Rex, waiting for a chance to slip past him. But Rex gave them no such opportunity. With a swing of his sword like a massive cleaver, he sent the innkeeper flying. The man slammed into the wall with a deafening thud, dislodging dust from the ceiling. Pressing a hand to his chest, he cast a quick glance into the room. His face paled instantly, and his body began to shake like a leaf as he looked back at Rex with terror-stricken eyes.
His "Tyrant" title was no exaggeration.
The mercenary leader hadn't realized what kind of monster he'd provoked. After only a brief exchange, he saw Rex's strength and ruthless efficiency, and before he could react, one of his men was decapitated, his blood spraying onto the leader's face, staining half of it crimson, the shock written plainly across his features.
The headless corpse fell toward the innkeeper, whose scream tore through the darkness in a high, chilling wail.
Rex turned his gaze on the mercenary leader, with a sinister, chilling smile casting ghastly shadows in the moonlight.
A shiver ran through the leader as a crushing sense of doom gripped him. His years of honed instincts kicked in, and without a second's hesitation, he shoved his remaining underling toward Rex as he turned to flee, moving with such desperate speed that even Ge Yan was awestruck. Too bad, Ge Yan thought. Rex is no ordinary swordsman.
With a single swing, Rex sliced the mercenary blocking his path in half. His left hand made a swift gesture, and the air itself seemed to shift. In the midst of his escape, the mercenary leader's upper body exploded into a shower of blood, his sword flying and embedding itself in a wooden post. His lower body stumbled forward a few steps before collapsing lifelessly.
