Shifting Perspectives

Why was he already considered dead?

When someone dies, many records and memories of them slowly vanish, and people gradually forget their existence.

For Lu Li, who had grown up in the Federation, this realization was quite a blow.

He thought back to the test before his graduation and combined it with what Qin Yu had told him. Gradually, he formed a hypothesis.

If the timeline matched up to three years ago, perhaps he hadn't died but had instead been gravely injured and somehow ended up in the R star system under the Glory Empire's rule. When the academy instructors couldn't find his body and he hadn't resurfaced after three years, they must have changed his status from missing to deceased. The graduation test that year had indeed been more dangerous than usual, and deaths among students weren't unheard of. It was only logical that they would assume he had died.

The lack of a body was easy enough to explain—he'd seen insect beasts devour human bodies entirely with his own eyes.

Even though he didn't manage to graduate, Lu Li was, after all, still a soldier and knew that no amount of wishful thinking would change the reality that he was now considered dead, and his status had shifted from a citizen to a ghost. Eventually, he accepted it.

Perhaps due to this acceptance, his mindset finally relaxed, and he found himself with more time to focus on this enigmatic partner who had appeared out of nowhere.

From Qin Yu, he learned that they had only been married for four months and that he only remembered the last two.

Initially, the short time span made him wonder if there was any issue with their marriage. But upon hearing Qin Yu's account, he realized that the lost three years were likely the period when they had met and fallen in love, leading him to observe Qin Yu more closely.

Lu Li still found it hard to believe he would marry someone like him.

This man wasn't romantic, thoughtful, or gentle. Despite being newlyweds, he treated Lu Li like they had been together for years, even decades. Their lives together were as calm as lukewarm water.

One might think such a routine would surprise someone like Lu Li, whose mind was still that of a young graduate on the eve of leaving the academy. But he found himself oddly comfortable in this uneventful life. He'd once imagined what it would be like to have an inseparable, clingy relationship after marriage, but the thought alone made him shudder.

Yes, this life suited him better.

His thoughts returning to the present, Lu Li focused on the man who tightly held his hand, leading the way with unwavering determination. The weapon in his other hand carved a path through the horde of insect beasts, leaving a bloody trail of corpses in their wake.

The insect beasts surged forward tirelessly, driven by a singular urge to tear them apart, yet not one managed to breach a meter's distance from them.

Each sweep of the man's arm was precise, felling the beasts before they could reach him. Sometimes one would be cut down, other times two or three would fall at once.

These insect beasts, which posed a dire threat to the Federation, were no more than insignificant pests in front of this man.

Lu Li marveled inwardly, beginning to understand why the Glory Empire was among the galaxy's most powerful domains; the Federation simply couldn't compare.

The technological gap encompassed not only advanced weaponry but also human enhancements. In the Empire, technology had managed to strengthen their bodies and augment their mental resilience. Their power wasn't without reason.

Lu Li felt a pang of admiration and wished for his own country to grow stronger. But he also understood that the strength of others was deeply rooted in their own capabilities and, ultimately… in their genes.

He had no way of knowing that Qin Yu's true capabilities surpassed even his highest estimations. To attain the rank of General at such a young age was unheard of, even in the Empire's long and storied history—a truth Lu Li would come to realize gradually.

In less than two hours, they had cleared thousands of insect beasts.

The number of creatures they had faced today was actually modest. During true insect plagues, entire planets would be overrun, with the creatures numbering in the billions or even hundreds of billions on larger worlds.

The planet beneath their feet lay within a high-risk zone for insect beast infestations. With humans still residing there, the Empire would dispatch military forces for extermination whenever outbreaks occurred.

Normally, an infestation of this scale wouldn't require Qin Yu's personal intervention. However, when they received word of the outbreak, they happened to be returning from another mission and took care of it on their way.

After a month of rigorous efforts, the afflicted areas had finally been restored to calm and safety.

The next outbreak wouldn't occur for another few months, as insect beast plagues took time to form. But the intervals weren't fixed; sometimes they would be two months, sometimes three or four.
