"...What do you mean by that?"
With his face still buried against Amber's broad chest, Ange murmured quietly, his words barely audible.
──Then why did you leave home with me? Why did you run away with me? Weren't you planning to stay with me forever?
But the swirl of thoughts in his mind refused to organize themselves into coherent words.
Unable to speak further, Ange could only tighten his grip around Amber, embracing him fiercely.
"...Ange, I'm sorry..."
"Idiot... Do you think an apology is enough? Tell me the real reason."
──Amber's body is burning up like this, too.
Why was he holding back? Why was he saying they couldn't go any further, even though he claimed to love him? Why couldn't they be bonded mates? Ange just couldn't understand.
After closing his eyes for a while, as if deep in thought, Amber finally spoke, though hesitantly, "It's because... there's something we don't fully understand... But there's data showing that human Omegas who mate with werewolves tend to have short lives."
──What?
Ange lifted his head, locking eyes with Amber.
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know why, but it's true. My mother died shortly after giving birth to me, and my brother's mother passed away when he was ten. Both were human Omegas."
Ange let out a small, bitter laugh.
"That's just..."
But Amber cut him off before he could finish.
"It's not just a coincidence."
Amber's eyes were serious. Ange knew he wasn't joking, not about something like this.
But still, it was hard to believe.
"My father didn't only have us. I have three sisters, each with a different mother. But I've never met any of their mothers."
"You mean they all passed away?"
Amber nodded softly.
"By the time I was old enough to understand, they were all gone."
For the first time, Ange realized why he had never seen anyone who might have been Amber's mother in the Tikaani household.
"Ange... I can't bear to lose you too. That's why..."
Amber's words were cut off when Ange pulled his head down forcefully and pressed their lips together.
──I won't let you say another word.
Determined, Ange pushed his tongue into Amber's mouth, not caring that his lips were scraped by Amber's sharp fangs.
